You know that old saying, “a friend in need is a friend indeed”? Recently, old friends came out in droves to lend a hand in the wake of MERRY bassist Tetsu‘s recent decommissioning back injury.
On October 12, during the MERRY x lynch. coupling Freaks Addict Tour beyond, fans, bands, and the bassist himself suffered a tremendous scare when Tetsu tumbled from stage, injuring his neck and back in the process. People were disappointed, angry, and perhaps most of all, frightened, and an audible sigh of relief rippled through the MERRY fandom when, on October 25th, the band released a statement about the incident and injury. Thankfully, the damage was not as severe as one may have expected when hearing “spinal cord injury,” and Tetsu was not left paralyzed. However, the injury was enough that the lanky bassist needed to withdraw from activities for three months to fully recuperate. At Tetsu’s behest, the band continued their activities in his absence.
During their subsequent promotional tour for their November single ZERO, the band made the bold decision not to assign a single support bassist and, instead, relied on connections and friends in various bands to help them out, such as RYO from defspiral, Kenjirou Murai from cali≠gari and the CYCLE, and kazu of Kagerou, all of whom rushed to support their friends in MERRY.
It was recently announced that for their New Year’s Eve performance at C.C. Lemon Hall, defspiral’s RYO will come to the rescue again, and, further, that MUCC‘s bassist YUKKE will stand in for still-recovering MERRY bassist Tetsu at the band’s upcoming twin tour finals on January 23rd and 24th at SHIBUYA-AX. MUCC and MERRY have a very long history together, having performed together for years, even venturing overseas in 2007 to participate in Los Angeles’s J-Rock Revolution. When asked his feelings on the situation, the longtime friend and colleague said, “I’m going to throw myself into the two day [final] with all my might, enough to make Tetsu feel better (haha)!”
MERRY as a band is no stranger to back injuries. In 2009, vocalist Gara himself had to step back from performing due to a herniated disc, and though he quickly returned to stage, the injury has plagued the screamer ever since.
