Sweet news for fans of Sugar, courtesy of our new bud MamaCass from o.t.o. show!
After Sugar’s sudden dissolution in July of 2009, former members SIZNA (gu.), Shingo (ba.), and Atsuto (dr.) swiftly moved on to other projects and have remained steadily involved in the music scene. SIZNA’s been acting like a Moran since 2010 and Shingo’s on a roll in GOTCHAROCKA. Atusto has been quite the busy bee; he rode the session circuit for a bit, played support for 9GOATS BLACK OUT when their drummer, aki, departed, and took a stab at a poppier sound in SIKA-BAMBI, until he settled into his own as a solo artist. Original bassist koto, who had left Sugar in late 2007, has been having a whale of a time as a member of amber gris.
But what happened to that bare-bellied, bellowing behemoth from center stage – former vocalist Loki?
Of all the former members of Sugar, Loki’s projects have probably been the most inconsistent and hardest to track. In the end of 2009, he put together a session band named König, which had two member rotations and two releases and made something of a splash when they were active. But König hasn’t made notable footfalls since 2012. While they are technically still considered active (pending announcements to the contrary), that particular session’s activity appears to have petered out.
Loki has remained active on Twitter, tweeting about his daily life while supporting and promoting former bandmates and industry friends. This summer, after a period of musical silence, Loki has finally gotten back into the swing of session bands, working together with some other recognizable names on a couple of new projects.
His first such foray of 2013 was on June 24 at Shibuya REX. He performed with a group tentatively known as 戸愚呂姉 (Toguro Ane, a reference to anime and manga series YuYu Hakusho), which consisted of Loki on vocals, former VIDOLL guitarist SHUN, SwallowtaiL bassist Yanagi, and original drummer of the GazettE, Yune.
About a month after that live, Loki announced on Twitter and on his official blog that some of those same members would perform in a new group on August 13, and that they did. Loki, Yune, and SHUN returned as LOUAGE and, together with a newcomer bassist named Yuki and ex-VII-Sense guitarist erina, joined an event live at Ikebukuro Chop.
In the month since, we’ve not heard much about whether LOUAGE will take stage again, so we can’t be sure whether it’s another one-time session or a more committed, long-term venture. Loki may still decide to resurrect König at some point. For now, fans can at least delight in the fact that Loki is still stirring up trouble in the visual kingdom.
