In May, we reveled in the announcement of MERRY‘s projected return to the stage after lamenting and worrying over a brief hiatus relating to vocalist Gara‘s herniated disc. Gara has suffered from this chronic condition since early 2009, when he suffered an injury during a fan-club live, forcing him to take a break from activity with the band. He delighted supportive fans by re-appearing on stage at the March 21 opening of their ～TOUR09 under-world [GI・GO]～ tour at Shibuya AX. Since then, he took to wearing a stylish corset that functioned as a supportive girdle while performing, but clearly this was insufficient. While a back injury might be more manageable for a less animated performer, Gara is known for his aggressive, convulsive throwdowns, which would be quite painful and could even worsen the extent of his injury.
Despite the severity of Gara’s condition – or perhaps a sign of successful treatment -, MERRY announced their revival concert, MERRY [devour act 2] 拝啓、最モ臭イ遊戯 絶望ノ窓カラ闇二降ル星…貪リ食ウ夢 (Haikei, Mottomo Kusai Yuugi Zetsubou no Mado kara Yami ni Furu Hoshi… Musaborikuu Yume), to take place at the outdoors Hibiya Yagai Daiongakudo, or Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall, on August 10.
Naturally, this seated concert sold out completely, leaving many disappointed and despondent.
After much pleading from fans, however, the band managed to pull off something to help make sure those fans wouldn’t be left out in the col — er, heat.
They’ve added a selection of standing tickets, which went on sale July 22nd (yesterday in Japan)! The new crop of tickets carries a price tag of ￥5,000 for advance sale or ￥6,000 day-of.
It’s not clear where the standing area will be located. Hibiya’s outdoor amphitheater is not quite a full semi-circle, and is wholly surrounded by trees. Fans with assigned seats would surely be miffed if standing fans were allowed to flood the aisles, but there is a walkway that circumscribes the seating area that could be filled with standing patrons.
In addition to this new opportunity for fans, MERRY also released a preview of the cover art for their limited, live-only re-recorded single, 窓 -replay- (Mado-replay-) which features an image of a student’s desk (the kind Gara is known for performing headstands and various other acrobatic stunts atop).
Finally, as a reminder, next Wednesday, July 31, MERRY’s latest pair of live DVDs will drop. The DVDs document their latest performance in the white sheep/black sheep tradition, “MERRY VERY BEST 20121130 Akasaka BLITZ ～Special 2night [Shiroi Hitsuji]～” and “[…] [Kuroi Hitsuji].” The content differs but the DVDs share a price point: ￥4,200. CORE fan club members can get their hands on a special edition copy featuring both DVDs plus live-recording CDs, and there will be a series of in-store handshake events throughout August for lambs who purchase both DVDs. Unfortunately, Gara will not be in attendance for any of these events, but guitarists Yuu and Kenichi, bassist Tetsu, and drummer Nero will all be there, waiting patiently to shake the hands of every fan who has supported them through their recent hardships.
