LUNATIC FEST.: A Weekend of Visual Kei History

lf2

From the first announcement of LUNATIC FEST., visual kei fans across the globe knew that big things were coming. As the big date loomed closer we took in lineup announcements and goods announcements with excitement. And then it came: At 9:30 am on June 27th, the stage hall doors opened and fans poured into the venue for sold-out Day 1.

Makuhari Messe is an enormous venue used for a variety of events, concerts, and trade shows. It boasts eight halls in the main complex, each 6,750 square meters — just bigger than an American football field. LUNATIC FEST. took up five of these main halls both days: one dedicated to merchandise and coat check; one dedicated to food, drinks, and sponsor booths; and the final three dedicated to the Shine, Fate, and main Moon stages.

Set up times were significantly reduced by switching stages for (almost) every act, which gave way to massive crowd migration from one side of the hall to another after each set. The most die-hard fans camped at the rails for their choice band several hours in advance to get the best spots possible and settled for watching other bands on other stages from one of the large screens near each stage.

Over the course of two days, both visual and non-visual bands of many different eras took to the stages, each connected in some way to LUNA SEA. Many — if not all — of the visual kei acts that we witnessed were also fundamental in building this scene up to what it is today.

We’ll not only be bringing you a look at each visual band which appeared over the course of the weekend, but we’ll introduce a bit of history as we go. Who is D’ERLANGER? What has DEAD END done for the scene? What does GLAY have to do with LUNA SEA? We hope you’ll not only enjoy reading about the events of the weekend, but also the events of yesteryear that built up to this phenomenal two-day event.

We invite you to keep an eye on this post, as we’ll add our articles band by band right here for you to enjoy. You can also like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter and Tumblr for updates right to the dashboard of your favorite social media site.
