Flashback Friday: GIVUSS
GIVUSS (2003)

GIVUSS (2003)

It’s time for your daily dose of visual kei history! Well, more like ongoing history. This week’s featured band has at least a few names that are still big in the industry today. We give you: GIVUSS.

GIVUSS (ギブス) formed in early 2003 and disbanded just one year later in March 2004. In that short amount of time, they managed to release a demo tape (remember those things?), three maxi singles, a VHS, and a track on an omnibus. Like most bands, this Loop Ash band went through a couple of member changes as well. It all worked out in the end, though, because several of the members of the final lineup are still extremely active in the visual kei scene we all know and love today.

GIVUSS officially opened their OHP on March 19th, 2003 and released their first and only demo tape 「十人賭色」 (Juunintoiro) just under four months later in July. The demo reached as high as 8th place on the weekly Oricon indies charts.  Unfortunately by then, guitarist Nao was no longer part of the lineup, but just a week after the demo tape release, second guitarist Rei was added to their lineup. With these members, GIVUSS performed their first “short tour” at the end of August 2003 that included three shows, one of them a sponsored event by PS COMPANY. Vocalist Shou also caught the attention of designer h.NAOTO, modeling for a show on Tokyo’s Omotesando that same month.

In September, the band announced that due to continued health concerns, guitarist Rei would leave the band following September 21st. This brought GIVUSS down to the four members that would be their lineup until their disbandment a few months later. Just days after this unfortunate departure, though, the band contributed one song to the omnibus “Shock Wave 2003″ released on September 24th. They successfully pulled off their first one-man show at Meguro Rockmaykan the following month on October 17th, where they also distributed their first maxi single 「ト在ル交差点」 (Tozairu Kousaten).

To round off 2003, GIVUSS released their second maxi single 「花鳥風月-hana,tori,kaze,tsuki-」 on December 3rd. It was limited to 3000 copies and reached 4th place on the weekly indies charts. They wasted no time in taking 2004 by storm with a New Year’s one-man show at Takadanobaba AREA. Their one and only VHS 「まじでヤバイ事になったよ」 (Maji de Yabai Koto ni Natta yo) was distributed here, much to the fans’ excitement. Things took a turn for the worse, though, when the band announced their impending disbandment at the end of March 2004. They commemorated the event with two one-man lives at Shibuya O-Crest on March 22nd and 23rd. Their third and final maxi single 「能音楽、無生命(no music, no life)」 (No Ongaku, Mu-seimei) wouldn’t be released until after their disbandment on March 31st.

So, where are they now? You’ve probably already noticed, but Shou and Tora went on to join the famous PS Company band Alice Nine. Tsunehito joined the ranks of D as their bassist. Drummer Yuu is now a part of THE KIDDIE as Yuudai. As for ex-guitarists Nao and Rei, they went on to join the ranks of GLAMMY (currently on hiatus) and FEECHE (disbanded in 2011), respectively. It’s refreshing to know where all of the members ended up for once, huh?

That, dear readers, is GIVUSS in a nutshell. They are not the first band in our Flashback Friday series to have such a short activity period, but it just goes to show you how much you can actually accomplish in the space of a year. Do you follow any of the bands the members ended up in? Did you find out anything that surprised you? Tell us what’s on your mind in a comment below! And don’t forget: if you have a band that you want us to write about, drop us a line anytime.
