It seems like recently there have been too many of these announcements in the visual kei world. Unfortunately, today we have to bring you another one: on April 24th, Gretel announced through vocalist Itsuki’s blog that they will be disbanding this May.
This is very sad news for such a recent band, one that would have reached their second anniversary this July. Since their start in 2012, the band has faced many difficulties. Although they began as a 4 member band, their drummer left in late 2012, and their guitarist followed in late 2013. Since then, vocalist Itsuki and bassist Chizuru have been the only two members, with the help of an official support drummer.
Despite their difficulties, Gretel kept very busy, touring extensively in the Tokyo area. Since their formation, they have made 5 releases continuing to show their promise as a great up and coming band.
Unfortunately, it seems that all good things must come to an end.
Here is the official announcement, as posted on vocalist Itsuki’s blog. This announcement also includes comments from both members, and has been translated by our own bambi.
An important announcement from Gretel.
Thank you very much for always supporting Gretel. We were originally planning on taking our activities underground from May 23rd, but following ongoing discussion between ourselves, we have decided to disband.
We apologise for the suddenness of this announcement. Our currently schedule still stands, and this will be our final activity as gretel. We promise to do our very best to make these three remaining shows everything you’ve come to expect from us, and we do hope you’ll continue to cheer for us until the end.
April 24, 2014[Schedule as of April 24] ・05.19 (Sun) Ash Osaka

・05.20 (Tue) Nagoya Holiday Next [Gretel last show] ・05.23 (Fri) Ikebukuro Cyber [Members’ comments]
It really is a shame to have to announce our breakup so suddenly. I know I’m not a great singer by any means, but I promise I’ll use this last chance to put everything I can into our songs. We don’t have much time, but it will mean so much to us if you’ll stay with us just a little bit longer.
We really are sorry to have to break this news to you. When we formed on July 17, 2012, we had four members, and now there’s just two of us left. We’d been thinking about our original plans, and how to prepare to make up for the loss while we were out of the scene.
When we first announced we were taking things underground, there were four of us, but when this went down to two, I started to have doubts about whether we should really keep calling ourselves Gretel if we’d not only be underground, but taking on new members as well.
I love Gretel, and I wanted to keep it special, and that’s why I thought about a breakup. I realised I wanted to give us a chance to bow out as we are now. Those of you who’ve supported us even when we lost half our members, who still loved us even when we were down to two, who promised you’d be waiting for our comeback — I really am so sorry to betray your goodwill.
In the short time we have left, I hope as many of you as possible — even just one of you — will come see the last of us. And the last of me as Gretel’s bassist, Chizuru.
Well, it seems as if the members have put everything that they could into the band, and felt left with no choice. They will continue touring for a while, so be sure not to miss their last concert! Hopefully fans will continue to support them through the end.
