kayas-short-story-collection

Kaya is releasing a series of short stories through Barks.jp which began on April 5th! The collection is called 「百鬼夜行奇譚」 (Hyakkiyagou Kitan) and they weave together the motifs used in Kaya’s music and his real life experiences.

The first one that was released, 『【不眠】~Psycho Butterfly~』 (【Fumin】~Psycho Butterfly~), is about the conflicts of a young man who while suffering from insomnia, searches for the meaning behind his existence. This story is based on the track 「サイコバタフライ」 (Psycho Butterfly) that was released on his album 「GLITTER」 which came out in July of 2008.

The background to the short story is as follows:

A young boy, in his room, is troubled by sleeplessness. He hates himself. On this sleepless night, he envisions a phantom butterfly. While chasing after the phantom butterfly, he begins to lose the boundaries between his dream and reality. Before his eyes, appears this beautiful and ugly existence. On the threshold of a dream, is what he catches a glimpse of fantasy? Reality? Or the darkness in his own heart? Choosing the butterfly that is the darkness of the heart, this sleepless young man describes the images in his mind.

So far only the first part to 『【不眠】~Psycho Butterfly~』 (【Fumin】~Psycho Butterfly~) has been posted, and the next part will be out on Barks.jp on April 12th.

Without further adieu, here’s the first part of 『【不眠】~Psycho Butterfly~』 (【Fumin】~Psycho Butterfly~)! Please do not post this elsewhere without express permission.

Late at night, One o’clock

He gazed at the dim light from his carelessly placed bed in his Western-styled, eight-tatami mat (sized) room. With his body wrapped in the soft sheets, he glanced towards the window, absently stroking his long black hair which he prided himself on. The fragile moonlight faintly spilled through the blinds, its frail rays accentuating the sharp angles of his gaunt cheeks. As it was the night of a holiday, he wondered why that the clouds which disturbed the long-awaited full moon were being so rude. He went to bed early, not wanting to let go of the moonbeam bath that he had been enjoying. However, no signs of warm sleep came to visit him.

He spent the night without sleep. Rather than calling it ‘insomnia’, it may be better to say that he was living with sleeplessness. The second hand of the clock resonated through the darkness. Although he’s stuck in this sleepless night, he’s been invited into the night by his own request, and has come to relish in it.

When he closes his eyes, the afterimages burn in his eyelids. He can see a butterfly swimming in the darkness, its colours, which are varied and hold no distinction, continue to disperse. For two hours he repeatedly tries to catch the phantom butterfly; the moon’s dim light bouncing off his extended arm as his palm grasps at the vacant air.

With a sense of self-mockery, he mutters to himself.
“What on earth are you doing? ——– What are you waiting for?”

I’m surprised about how well written this first part is – but it really fits to Kaya with these elegant metaphorical language. Even though I don’t like Kaya’s music, I have to admit his style of writing is very pleasant to read.
(And I would so die to be at this live… even though it would be only for aie, Shingo and Atsuto |D)
