Review: DECAYS "Secret mode"

DECAYS

When we heard Die (DIR EN GREY) was starting his own solo unit with Kei Kashiyama of MOON CHILD–known as DECAYS–we expected something more akin to the growling, screaming vocals that are prevalent in DIR EN GREY tunes.

We were pleasantly surprised, to say the least, by “Secret mode,” the group’s first release. It took digital charts by storm for its iTunes release in music video form on July 23rd, 2015. “Secret Mode” features a booming, dance-inducing rhythm that’s more akin to 80’s pop than the heavy metal elements that define DIR EN GREY’s sound.

Vocalist and guitarist Yusuke Kobayashi (THE NOVEMBERS)’s clear alto range compliments Die’s lower vocals perfectly. However, it is undoubtedly the guitar that pulls in the listener’s attention, from its funky verses to its melodic chorus. The technique used is nothing less than we would expect from Die and his assemblage of fellow rock veterans.

You can purchase the music video for “Secret mode” on iTunes here. A live version was also released on December 30th, which you can find here. For more information on DECAYS, check out their OHP or read our introduction article.
