Drummer Tsukasa will soon be significantly expanding his career, and experimenting with new genres. A few days ago, he announced on his blog that along with continuing THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S, he would be embarking on a solo career as an Enka singer, a dream he has had for quite some time.
It seems that in starting this new career, Tsukasa will be in two very different worlds at once. Drumming and singing is not an entirely uncommon combination–many artists have proven to be competent at both in the past. However, Enka and Visual Kei are two very distinct genres in the Japanese music scene that do not overlap much, if at all. Hopefully Tsukasa will enjoy working in both genres, and perhaps he will even be able to apply knowledge of each of them to strengthen the other.
Tsukasa began his career in a band called Le’veil, and became well-known with his work as drummer for D’espairsRay from 1999 to 2011. Since D’espairsRay officially broke up, he has been working with group THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S. His next step will be adding a solo project as an Enka singer.
The following entry was posted on his blog and translated by Ku:
Thank you for my birthday one-man live yesterday.
My birthday was on March 6th but I wanted to observe my birthday yesterday, too
And it’s like my birthday came twice; what a luxury!!
I feel really appreciative.
Thank you so much, everyone.
Yesterday at the MH4NS a rich, diverse set was able to unfold
Beginning with an unheard-of drum solo
And with the introduction of the new song, “Seimei no Tou”
And with the SE with I’m like a bird in a cage & U too
And with the SE with HELLO MY CLONE
And so on.
And, even though it wasn’t my real birthday I was really moved by having the birthday song sung to me.
I’m appreciative to all the MYCLONEs who rocked out from beginning to end.
Band preparations were really tough but
At the encore, an enka corner was established
As a kind of business trip to Snackshi* which holds DJ night.
While happy and stressed that
I’ll evolve at the next one-man,
I could do nothing but put the results of my thinking into song, how about that. (lol)
But I borrowed the space to be able to sing this song
And made the announcement that I, TSUKASA, in addition to THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S
Will from here on embark on solo activity in the world of enka music.
As I’d like to do my very best from here on in order to debut at the beginning of my activities,
Whether or not you have an interest in enka, please kindly watch over me,
And please give me your continued voices of support.
About a year and a half ago, I told my bandmate kazuya the details
That I’d actually thought about doing enka seriously before I started with the MH4NS
And he said it’d be a waste if I let that dream end
And he did a lot to help my dream.
And what I’ve arrived at now
Is that this year, on June 8th (Sun), I’ll appear as a guest
At a friendly concert by enka singer Koji Handa.
The location will be the Sagamihara, Kanagawa Shimin Kaikan (Civic Hall).
↓ Details are here
Please contact Koji Handa’s office for ticket inquiries.
This is fate that I’ve encountered
While meeting many people through Mr. Handa and kazuya.
I am incredibly grateful
That so many different people have been active for the sake of this other dream of mine,
And that someone like me whom Koji Handa hardly knows, has been given this chance to sing in his company.
My singing ability isn’t yet satisfactory to others,
And if I put it plainly it’s really simple,
But I was taught by Mr. Handa that singing is one’s heart
So first I’ll carefully do my very best.
I think I would regret more than anything if I died without doing the things I want to do.
There will be no regrets if what I want to do can’t be done.
It would be nice if I could succeed. I want to return the favors I’ve gotten from so many people.
And, yesterday I sang an original song which I composed and wrote lyrics for myself,
And I think there were both people there who are interested in me as well as people who aren’t.
But I want you to understand me so I sang with all my might.
I know that taking on two roles is tough.
Please give me your support as I work hard at both the MH4NS and enka.
Lastly, I’d like to warmly express my gratitude
To THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S members who have wished me the best with these activities,
To the MYCLONES in Japan and around the world, the staff, and related persons,
And to my family.
As he mentions in his blog, this is a dream that he has had for a long time, and he will finally begin to pursue it properly. Surely fans, whether interested in Enka or not, will be interested to hear what his new music will sound like. Luckily, his first performance is already decided, as mentioned in the blog entry. He will be a special guest to singer Koji Handa on June 8th at Kanagawa Civil Hall. For more information, check out the link in the blog post.
Hopefully fans will continue to support Tsukasa on this exciting new endeavor! Are you looking forward to hearing his new songs? Let us know, and stay posted!
