Flashback Friday: Mar'derayla
Mar'derayla, August 2003

Mar’derayla, August 2003

First off, our apologies for not releasing these on a consistent or timely basis. That’s going to change from now on!

Our third Flashback Friday band was nominated by a reader — this week, it’s Mar’derayla!

It seems Mar’derayla is a name known among UNDER CODE fans for being the springboard for the careers of Jun and Iori, long-time members of the label who have since been in bands like Phantasmagoria and spiv states. A Kansai-based band, Mar’derayla was active for only a short time — just over a year and a half. Regardless, during that time they were active enough to put out several releases, and fortunate enough to go through only a single member change.

Mar’derayla (マーディレイラ) had its first performance at ON AIR OSAKA at Matina’s final new year’s party in 2002, making them one of the first bands signed to UNDER CODE PRODUCTION when it was founded March 2003. Their new year’s appearance was as a secret band and marked an unofficial start of activities; the band’s official commencement was on February 7, 2003.

Their first release was the limited mini-album 「軌跡…ring-」 (Kiseki…ring-) which came out on May 10, 2003. On the 26th of the same month, Rui left the band to  join THE PETTY THUGS as a support member. Toki replaced him a month later. In July, Mar’derayla had a track, “Masquerade”, released on the omnibus 「妖幻鏡III」 (Yogenkyo III). Naturally, only the remaining four founding members were credited for its creation, indicating that the song was written after Rui’s departure and completed before Toki was a member.

In August, they hosted their first self-sponsored live and participated in their first three-man (which happened to be free) with Karen, 12012, and Kisaki’s special guest session band 妃&関西鬼族 (Kisaki&Kansai Onizoku). The same month, their maxi-single 「寂光…rest-」 (Jyakkou…rest-) was released. The final hallmark of the month was their first performance in Kanto, at CLUB CITTA on the 29th.

LOVE&PEACE&HORROR

LOVE&PEACE&HORROR

With the busy summer behind them, Mar’derayla plowed headlong into the colder months. Their second omnibus appearance was September 30th on “High Style Paradox 1″ with the song 「夕刻の懺悔」(Yuugoku no Sange). They kicked off 2004 with a 2-day event at BOOMIN HALL, “LA MORT-SPECIAL 2DAYS-,” followed by their contribution of 2 tracks to the omnibus DVD “High Style Paradox 2″. March brought their 2nd maxi single “LOVE&PEACE&HORROR.”

In May, their 5-track second mini-album 「潜在 marvel…」(Senzai marvel…) went on sale. Mar’derayla would go on to participate in two more omnibus albums, “High Style Paradox 3″ and “CROSS GATE2004~Neo Locus~” before their very first one-man “SWEET STRICT HORROR” at Osaka club vijon. But the very next day, they held their disbandment live at BOOMIN HALL on August 1st, 2004. At the live, they distributed free copies of their video 「LA MORT~殺戮部隊親愛FILM~」 (LA MORT~Satsuriku Butai Shinai FILM~).

Mar'derayla (2004)

Mar’derayla final line-up (2004)

And so, Mar’derayla was history. It marked the end of a musical career for some and just the beginning for others. Whatever the case, the Kansai band surely left a mark on Visual Kei’s–and UNDER CODE’S–history.

Where are the members now? Guitarist Jun, who is credited with most of the band’s musical composition, continued to take the musical lead in bands such as Phantasmagoria, spiv states, and GOTCHAROCKA. Fellow guitarist Iori followed his lead into Phantasmagoria and spiv states, but left in 2009 due to long-term back problems that forced him into retirement. The fates of bassist Hagane and drummer Toki are unknown. As for vocalist Hayato, he evidently went on to carry out a salaryman’s life; he was spotted at one of Eze:quL’s live in 2012 and is pictured in this blog post.

So, readers, what do you think about one of UNDER CODE’s first bands? Are you already a fan? What about the bands that some of the members are in now? And what do you think about Hayato’s salaryman life? Let us know, readers – leave a comment below!
