Many of our readers were disappointed to hear about amber gris’ disbandment this May. We only translated the official announcement for you then, but now member comments have arrived. Each member had a little something heartfelt and somewhat poetic to say. Read all of their comments in full below, translated by yours truly:
If I say things like
Or “I’m sorry,”
It would have a bit of a reverse effect,
So I’ll leave that to the other members.
I feel safe entrusting this to them.
What we can accomplish together as amber gris is coming to an end.
That’s why I said from the very beginning
That I believe
We should end it in a way that suits us.
Anger, and laughter again.
Waking, and sleeping.
We are putting an end to this kind of career
Whose life is just like a human’s.
Whether or not its existence will continue to last forever is something I leave up to each and every one of you.
It will at least last forever
In the five of us.
There’s only a little bit of time left for us to be indebted to you.
We have to prepare for our parting.
I don’t have a problem with joking around with you,
But I don’t want you to think I’m messing around.
How long until we reached The Promised Land?
Who will be waiting there for us?
Will the starving baby birds fall
Without first flying?
Just like a movie, or an anime, or a manga, the 5-and-a-half-year-long story called “amber gris” will come to an end on 5/27 at Akasaka BLITZ.
The word “disbandment” is usually used to cover up bad things, but as long as you remember amber gris’ works as they are now, I think you’ll be able to understand.
This is the beginning of amber gris’ last chapter. I hope that as many people can experience the beginning and end of this tale as possible. I hope that we can leave something behind.
Please forgive us for having to make this decision, and please understand that it was a decision made in order to keep on loving amber gris.
That is the kind of place that both the members and fans have in my heart.
I want us to be perfect because you love us.
We must not cling to selfish thoughts.
Ah, I really love amber gris and our Franny.
“Although its scent still lingers on
the form of a flower has scattered away
For whom will the glory
of this world remain unchanged?
Arriving today at the yonder side
of the deep mountains of evanescent existence
We shall never allow ourselves to drift away
intoxicated, in the world of shallow dreams.”*
Even when all hope is lost, humans keep on breathing.
Try to think of a name for that.
Try shouting it out.
It certainly exists where there are those that still call its name.
*[Translator’s Note: He’s quoting a famous Japanese poem called “Iroha.” If you’d like to read more about it, check out this Wikipedia page.]
The time has come for our band to end.
Every beginning has an end. This is that time; this is the decision we’ve made.
There are only 3 short months left, but I them to be the most packed 3 months of our career with everyone.
I wish for rich times, like an eternally revolving lantern.
Let us hear the voices of our Franny that watch over the light carried by the 5 of us.
We’ll answer your calls with all of our strength.
My Beloved Franny,
I have to go soon. I want to spend the time we have left with our Franny.
Let’s have a chat in my garden.
Stay by my side.
